Student Choice Activity List on Social Identities

Since you all are on slightly different pages with making your mask AND still need to learn some content about race and identity, I designed this activity to give you the opportunity to work at your own pace, explore aspects of race and identity that most interest you AND still be able to work on your masks.
Let's head over to google classroom to scope this document out!
When you are NOT working directly on your mask, you should be completing this assignment.
Deadline: Thursday, start of class (unless you absolutely need more time, but then you'll have to have homework over the long weekend)

Mask Making Process

I won't be here tomorrow so you won't be able to make a mask tomorrow, but you can sand and mod podge. If you don't have a mask yet, you need to arrange to make one with me and a partner during lunch today!

Ideally, by the end of today, everyone has done the following:

Made a mask
Trimmed and covered holes
Plaster of paris to smooth it out

Next step is to sand and mod podge it!

Mean Girls Assessment Grades: I have started grading this assignment and will have them all done by next Tuesday. I am using a detailed rubric and entering in grades into IC as I complete. I won't enter grades into google classroom. You will be able to refine them if you choose next week but will need to set up a time to conference with me if you think you need additional feedback beyond the rubric and student example I provide.

SLC Reminders! Tomorrow night!

What are SLC's? A time for you to reflect on your academic and social well-being with your parents. Rather than traditional parent-teacher conferences, we empower students to take ownership over their learning.
Time: 30 minutes between 4 and 6 pm (Libby sent out a sign-up email for your parents and you to choose your time slot)
Where: Torrey's, Jenny's and Ashley's classrooms
Date: Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 19th
What do you need to bring?

Laptop
Your parent/guardian
Positive attitude and willingness to take ownership for your learning!

What should you wear? Professional Dress!

Button down shirt with tie OR a shirt with a finished neck/blouse/nice sweater
Dark socks to match trousers
Skirt or dress
No sneakers or excessively high heels

*Talk to Erin Skyles if you need help!!!
What do you need to do to prepare?
Nothing! We have a set of questions that you'll discuss with your parents/guardians regarding your experience thus far at Animas. Just be ready to think deeply and be honest!

Starter 24: Complete Project Journal #2

You'll have 20 minutes to work on this in class, then it is homework, due tomorrow. We'll head down to the Commons to make masks after the first 20 minutes.
Get out your note-taking guide to "Unpacking the Invsible Knapsack"

Then, go to the google classroom document and below Project Journal #1, answer these questions, aiming for ¾ of a page to 1 page TOTAL:

What part of “Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” did you strongly agree or disagree with and WHY?
To what degree and in what ways does race impact your own personal life and/or identity? Try to determine percentage, from 0-100% that is impacted by race. (Consider emotional, social, economic, intellectual, psychological impacts. Think of your own race, not the race of others)
How much influence do you think “white privilege” has on your life? Note: even if you don’t identify as white, it can still have an influence, no?

Homework

Reminder on the process for making masks (we'll start brainstorming for REAL your final mask designs on THURSDAY, then do peer critiques next TUESDAY followed by starting your essay drafting and designing the final masks at the same time. Our exhibition isn't until the Thursday before Thanksgiving Break)

Mask Making Time

Don't have a mask yet? Make a mask if you haven't yet (this is about as far as you'll get today)

Use 4 layers!!! You want it thick!

Have a mask??
Step 1: Trim and cover the holes with strips of plaster, let it dry!
Step 2: Plaster of paris to smooth it out, let it dry!
Step 3: Sand paper and mod podge (the next day, after it has dried!)

Starter 23: "Defining Race"

Imagine that you apply for a copy of your birth certificate, and when you receive it you discover that it lists your “race” as something other than what you and everyone else have always considered it to be. You are white and it says you are black, or you are black and it says you are white. That is exactly what happened to Susie Guillory Phipps, a woman who had always considered herself white, as did almost everyone she met.

Read this short essay to learn more then pick 1 of the 4 questions at the end to answer in your comp book.

Homework AND a note on the mask-making process

Homework today will be to finish the Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack note-taking guide and start project journal #2!
As for our mask-making process- we'll take a break today until we get more plaster!

Duet 2 Only: Take the implicit bias test

Go back to the google classroom assignment we started yesterday at the end of class
In addition to taking the one on race, take one more test on an area you'd like to assess your own bias on.
Remember, Verna Meyers encouraged us to identify our biases and then try to overcome them by staring at images that challenge that bias AND forming authentic relationships with other people!
