Welcome to Humanities 9: 1st day of class

Teamwork Challenge #1 

• Sit in birthday order so that the person with the birthday closest to January 1 sits in Seat 1.
  
• The year you were born doesn't matter.
  
• Don't skip seats.
  
• When everyone is seated, the student in Seat 5 will raise his or her hand and report that the class is ready to begin.

Starter #1: Function of Education (15 minutes)

1. Tape the comp. book instructions into the front cover of your comp book (I have a TON Of extra comp books! Just rip out the pages that have been used, recycle those, and write your name on the cover with a sharpie.)
2. Leave your comp books on your class’s material shelf each day (top shelf!)
3. Write "Starter #1, 8/26" at the top of the 1st page of the comp book and answer these questions:

• What is one word that best captures your experience in middle school?
• What do you think the purpose of EDUCATION is?​

Name Tents- Yay! (10 minutes)

Make a name tent like Ashley’s example:

1. Your Name
2. Pictures of things you love doing outside of school

We'll go over names and there will be a prize for whomever has everyone’s names memorized by Monday!

Break and Class procedures skits

Let’s head outside!  I’m going to put y’all in 10 groups, each group with one of the classroom procedures. Your task while at break (in 10 minutes) is to come up with a skit and then be ready to perform it for the class throughout today and tomorrow when called upon!

Read and annotate "The Function of Education" by Krishnamurti

1. We’re going to read this super thought-provoking test that may call into question your concept of what the purpose of education is.  We’ll seminar on it tomorrow, but first, you need to read and annotate it!
2. Here is an example of an annotated text
3. Let’s review some other guidelines for how to annotate
4. Now, get to reading!

• Read as much of the reading as you can. Mark quotes that stand out to you as thought-provoking, interesting, inspiring or with which you strongly disagree.
• Try to identify the author's thesis: What does Krishnamurti claim the purpose of education is?
• Be prepared to share your selections and make meaning together tomorrow in our first Socratic Seminar of the year!
